Flu hits Bulgaria, schools closed
SOFIA, Jan 26, 2000 -- (Reuters) Bulgaria has declared a flu epidemic and closed schools for a week after the Sydney influenza strain sweeping large parts of Europe reached the Balkan nation, officials said on Wednesday.
More than 3,000 people of the eight-million population had been reported affected by the flu by Tuesday and more than 16,000 were suffering from respiratory infections, an official at the Health Ministry said.
Non-urgent surgeries in hospitals have been put off until the epidemic was over.
